India ranks first in mobile data usage per subscriber and provides the lowest data prices globally, as per economic survey.  It noted that there has been a significant shift in India's telecommunications technology sector, highlighting a successful ongoing transition from "technology importer" to "technology developer and exporter".

The survey estimated India's average wireless data consumption per user each month at 21.2 GB as of September for the fiscal year 2024-25 (FY25), noting that the nation's accomplishment of the quickest 5G deployment worldwide highlighted its technological strength in the telecom industry.

India's telecom industry is growing due to the smartphone surge, increasing data usage, and the emergence of technologies such as 5G. According to the survey, "India ranks as the second-largest telecommunications market, boasting more than 1.18 billion telephone subscribers, a total teledensity of 84%, and 941 million broadband users as of October 31, 2024."

It stated that in 'telecommunications, computer & information services', India holds 10.2% of the global export market (ranking as the second-largest exporter worldwide), showcasing its robust role in IT outsourcing, software development, and digital services.

However, it noted that demand elasticity in the post and telecoms industry was still low at 0.32, in contrast to 1.86 for the financial sector. It stated that this indicated the post and telecoms sector had attained a significant level of market saturation in the last thirty years.
